In the wake of the Christchurch terror attack which left 49 people dead and 48 seriously wounded, Islamic Community Mill\u00ee G\u00f6r\u00fc\u015f chairman Kemal Erg\u00fcn has called on Muslims to numerously attend today\u2019s Friday prayers but also to remain vigilant. \u201cWe will not allow for terrorists to reach their goal\u201d, Erg\u00fcn said. \u201cWe will stand side by side and demonstrate even more cohesion and solidarity on an overall societal level.\u201d In his statement, the chairman also urged German politicians to make sure Muslims are safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier today, a group of right-wing extremists carried out terror attacks on two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, where local Muslims had gathered for the weekly Friday prayers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 15th of March 2019 will forever be remembered as a black day. The evil acts committed in Christchurch are unmatched in their brutality.\u201d According to Erg\u00fcn, deeds such is these showed what people driven by hatred were capable of. \u201cWe condemn this sort of violence in the strongest of terms. May Allah have mercy on the souls of the deceased and give strength to their families and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is high time to tackle racism in general and islamophobia in particular, both of which are globally on the rise\u201d, Erg\u00fcn continued. \u201cThe hate grows ever stronger and becomes more violent. More and more frequently, Muslims become victims of violent assaults, also in Europe. At the same time, we are observing an indifference towards their concerns. Such acts only gain attention when brutality reaches a new high, when people are murdered. These developments cause us great concern\u201d, said Erg\u00fcn.<\/p>\n

\u201cSociety as a whole is asked to raise their voice against all forms of injustice \u2013 no matter where and to whom it happens or who commits it. Iniquities such as this aim at sowing hatred and divide society. We will not let that happen! More than ever before, we are asked to demonstrate solidarity and cohesion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erg\u00fcn called on all Muslims, to numerously attend today\u2019s Friday prayers in their local mosques, and to pray for the victims and their families. But he also warned them to be vigilant. At the same time, Erg\u00fcn urged representatives of the state to work closer together with Muslim communities in order to guarantee their safety. \u201cIt would be unacceptable if Muslims had to be afraid to attend a mosque. As long as the reasons behind the acts, the culprits and their networks have not been firmly identified, national security agencies have to remain highly alert\u201d, said Erg\u00fcn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
