“We have a shared responsibility to make sure that the remembrance of the Holocaust victims never fades,” said Ali Mete, Secretary General of the Islamic Community Millî Görüş (IGMG). He spoke about the Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on August 3 to remember the Sinti and Roma people who perished during the National Socialism era.

“The Holocaust Remembrance Day, which honors the murdered Sinti and Roma, is a significant opportunity to acknowledge the unfathomable persecution that these people experienced throughout the National Socialist era. As members of an Islamic community, we feel it is necessary to show solidarity and compassion, as well as actively participate in the culture of remembrance, to ensure that such heinous atrocities are never repeated. We commemorate the victims with deep respect and compassion.

Islam teaches us that every person’s life is extraordinarily precious and that their dignity is untouchable. Discrimination against people based on their ethnicity, religion, or culture, or attempting to eradicate their identities contradict the core principles of our faith.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stressed the significance of treating everyone fairly and condemned all kinds of injustice. In accordance with our religious principles and values, the IGMG urges the maintenance of awareness of the Holocaust’s atrocities against the Sinti and Roma.

We all have a responsibility to prevent the Holocaust victims’ memories from being lost or forgotten. May their stories remind us again and again that we must fight injustice together and build a world of peace, tolerance, and dignity for everyone.”
