The Abrahamic Attitude: Submission and Trust
29. April 2026
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
Islam, regards Prophet Ibrahim (as) as one of the Ulul al-‘Azm prophets and he stands as the example of the submission and trust that Allah desires from him. Allah (swt), the All-Powerful, states in the Qur’an regarding Prophet Ibrahim (as): “When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit,’ he replied, ‘I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds.’”[1] The Prophet Muhammad (saw) also referred to Prophet Ibrahim (as) by saying:“Every prophet has a close friend among the other prophets. My close friend is my forefather, Ibrahim, whom my Lord has taken as a friend.”[2]
Prophet Ibrahim (as) is the symbol of the struggle for monotheism. At every moment of his life, he lived at the peak of submission through his trust in Allah. Whether breaking idols, being cast into the fire or preparing to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah, he carried the same words in his heart: “Allah is sufficient for me; and He is the best disposer of affairs.”[3]
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
The Abrahamic attitude, which serves as an example for us, begins with trusting in Allah. Submission does not mean abandoning intellect or free will, rather, it is to use them in line with Allah’s pleasure. Even when he knew he would be thrown into the fire, Prophet Ibrahim (as) was able to say, “I have submitted to Allah.” This is the unwavering stance of a heart shaped by faith.
A servant who trusts in Allah (swt) turns not to rebellion in the face of trials, but to patience. Submission is not placing one’s own plans above all else but recognising the decree of Allah as superior. For they know that the decree of Allah is always for the good of His servants.
Dear Jama’ah!
Today, our duty is to embody the Abrahamic submission and trust in every aspect of our lives. In the flow of life, turning to Allah in the face of challenges is a requirement of true reliance (tawakkul). Faith must not only be on the tongue, but also manifest in the heart, in actions, and in one’s character. Let us act with Abrahamic morals in our families, our work and our social lives. The path to this is through being truthful and honest, being patient and upholding trust. Especially instilling this consciousness of submission in the hearts of our youth, who are our future, will illuminate our tomorrow with the light of faith.
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
Let us remember and repeat the dua of Prophet Ibrahim (as) mentioned in the Qur’an:
“O Allah! Make me and those from my descendants steadfast in establishing prayer. O Allag, accept my supplication.”[4]
May Allah (swt) equip us with Abrahamic faith, submission and trust. May He open our hearts to His pleasure and our paths to His guidance. Let us conclude our khutba with the supplication made by Prophet Ibrahim together with his son Prophet Ismail while rebuilding the Kaaba: “O Allah! Make us both among those who submit to You, and from our descendants raise a ummah that submits to You. Show us our ways of worship and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the One who continually accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.”[5] Ameen.
