Khutba: Obeying the Limits Set by Allah

01. December 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

For us to reach the happiness of this world and the hereafter, Allah (swt) set certain limitations. Within the drawn borders, there are principles, rules, orders and prohibitions related to our personal and social life. These are called “Hudûdullâh” in the Qur’an. We have been informed that if we obey Hudûdullâh, we will attain the honour of gaining success in this world and the hereafter, and that there is a humiliating torment when we cross the line. Allah (swt) has revealed these limits to His servants both in the Qur’an and through our Prophet (saw). It is forbidden to redefine the limitations according to our desires and to take them lightly. When we look at the determining issues regarding halal and haram, it is stated that; things that people like naturally which are good, beautiful and beneficial in nature are halal, and those that are pleasing to the Nafs alone but in reality, are not beneficial are haram.

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

To be upright as we are commanded, not only what we consume and spend, but also our actions must be straight. In today’s world, where people give importance to the dunya rather than spirituality and face the danger of becoming worldly, Hudûdullah is frequently ignored. Rasulullah (saw) has said: “There will come a time when a person will not care whether he obtains his goods from halal or haram!”[1] The Quran also mentions, “So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allāh], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.”[2]

Dear Jama’ah!
The limits set by Allah (swt) determine what is haram and halal in our daily life. To violate these limits means to ignore the limits of Allah (swt). Those who commit acts such as violating someone’s rights, lying, slandering, backbiting, indulging, gambling, drinking alcohol are transgressors. Violating the rights of workers and not complying with public law are also situations that exceed limits. As a matter of fact, those who violate the public are violating the right of Allah (swt). Going to extremes, both in worship and in our daily life, is also prohibited by the Prophet (saw). As a matter of fact, we have been advised to choose the middle path and to be moderate by maintaining balance in the affairs of this world and the hereafter. Our entertainments, special days and weddings should be within the line that Allah (swt) has ordained for us. We should act in this direction, especially by giving importance to privacy and remembering that we are always representing Islam. As one of our scholars have stated, “The Halal circle is broad, it is enough for pleasure. There is no need for sinning.

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

Let’s not risk our hereafter by getting caught up in temporary desires in this world where death comes not with age but with fate. Let’s take ourselves into account and make useful preparations for the rest of our lives. Let the Quran and Allah (swt) guide our daily lives, not our environment or social media. May Allah (swt) make us one of his servants who obey the Hudûdullah, are direct as he is commanded, and organise their lives according to the Qur’an and Sunnah.
