The Believer’s Attitude During Times of Economic Crisis

Dear Brothers and Sisters! The world is not only a place of comfort and prosperity. It is a place of trial, where ease comes together with hardship. For the believer, it is a test of patience, submission and servitude to Allah. Allah (swt) tests us at times with abundance and at other times with hardship. Indeed, in the Qur’an, it is stated: “We will certainly test you with a measure of fear and hunger, and with loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. But give glad tidings to those who are patient.”[1] The believer knows that wealth, health and opportunities are not given as absolute rights, but as blessings and favours from Allah, not as something eternal, but as a trust granted for a limited time. With this understanding, the believer is able to show patience more easily in the face of difficulties, without falling into rebellion or fear.

Justice and the Consciousness of Trust in Islam

Dear Brothers and Sisters! Islam, commands believers, as individuals, to be just and to uphold trusts. As a society, it aims for an order where oppression does not exist, the rights of others are protected and trust and justice prevail. In the Qur’an, it is stated: “Indeed, Allah commands you to return trusts to those entitled to them and, when you judge between people, to judge with justice.”[1] Through this, safeguarding trusts and acting with justice are clearly commanded. For when trusts are not protected, the scales of justice are disturbed, and where there is no justice, trusts are not given to those who are worthy of them. Justice is the most important value of society, the voice of conscience, the guarantee of peace and the foundation of trust. Justice is to give every rightful person their due, to uphold the truth even when it is against us and to always stand with those who are right. Where justice disappears, oppression certainly begins. Regarding oppression, which our religion strictly forbids, our Prophet (saw) warns us as follows: “Beware of oppression, for oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection.”[2]

The event of Hijrah, which is accepted as the beginning of our Hijri calendar, refers to the great journey undertaken by our Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his companions from Makkah to Madinah in the year 622.

The Ethics of Unity and Brotherhood

Dear Brothers and Sisters! It is clearly stated in the Qur’an that believers are brothers. In Islam, brotherhood is not limited only to being born from the same parents. Allah (swt) informs us that every believer, regardless of language or race, is our brother or sister. At the heart of this brotherhood, which binds us firmly together, is the awareness of being servants of Allah and members of the ummah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw). In many hadith, it is stated that Muslims must love one another, and that a person cannot truly have complete faith until they wish for their Muslim brother or sister the same goodness they wish for themselves. Our Prophet (saw) always encouraged beautiful deeds to strengthen love among believers, saying: “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I tell you of something which, if you do it, will cause you to love one another? Spread peace among yourselves."[1]
