Prejudice and Social Peace

Dear Brothers and Sisters! Islam, brings people together rather than dividing them. It is founded on brotherhood rather than hostility and mercy rather than hatred. Social peace is more than the absence of war or conflict. True peace exists when people trust one another, justice prevails, differences are respected and everyone feels safe. Building such a society begins with laws, but sustaining it requires good character. One of the greatest enemies of this character is prejudice.

Dear Brothers and Sisters! Islam calls us to uphold good character in our speech, our hearts and all our actions. A believer lives with the awareness of being in Allah's presence. This awareness extends beyond the mosque, the home and the workplace to our phone screens and social media. Today, our words come not only from our tongues, but also from our keyboards. A sentence we write, a comment we make or an image we share can reach thousands of people within seconds. We must therefore never see the digital world as a place where we can hide behind false names and identities and act however we want. Rather, it is a great test in which we must be especially careful to respect the rights of others.

The Status of Teachers and Scholars

Dear Brothers and Sisters! Learning the truth and having someone to teach it, are matters of immense importance. It was our beloved Prophet (saw) who taught us the truths of our faith in their entirety. One day, the Messenger of Allah (saw) entered the mosque and came upon two groups: one was reciting the Qur'an and making dua, while the other was learning and teaching knowledge. After affirming that both groups were engaged in goodness, he said of the circle of knowledge, “These people are learning knowledge and teaching it. I was sent only as a teacher.”[1] He then sat among them. In doing so, he made clear that he had been sent to teach us our religion, both as a Prophet and as a teacher.
